character information
● name: Kai Anderson
● canon: American Horror Story: Cult
● canon point:
● age: Unstated, 25+
● (canon) background: wiki
● abilities: Kai is an extremely charismatic and manipulative speaker and leader. He is a mastermind of creating an environment that he thrives in and enabling people to do anything he tells them to do.
● strengths:
One of Kai's most defining traits is that he is charismatic. Kai is not only a smooth talker one on one where he has an ability to persuade people that he is the only person they can trust with their darkest secrets but he is also able to command the attention of large groups of people. On an individual level, he was able to convince people to tell him what they feared most (for example: his sister was most afraid of him and Meadow was afraid of losing the man she loved the most). In groups, he was able to inspire a cult mentality in his followers. They trusted his words and visions explicitly. Aside from the followers committing numerous murders for him, perhaps another even more prominent showing of this on a grand scale was convincing all of his followers to drink koolaid in a Jim Jones fashion, convincing them all it was poisoned before they drank it.
Kai is also very intelligent. He tested as a genius when he was young and was invited to join Mensa which, he did not do. His intelligence is shown in a vast wealth of knowledge. He understands geopolitical atmospheres very well, being able to use Trump's rise as a catapult for his own movement. He has a seemingly endless knowledge of historical cult leaders and religious movements (this is shown most often in "story times" where the white shirts of his cult would listen to stories of Jim Jones, Charles Manson, etc. enraptured with Kai's storytelling skills). He did get a degree in religious studies, although, after he was done he did not seem to know what to do with it and was aimless for sometime in pre-canon. His father would berate him about his failures and Kai being a leech at home until the murder-suicide that took his parents' lives.
Lastly, Kai is very good at adapting. He knows both how to manipulate a situation and a person or group of people to his will. He has an intuition about how to survive, how to read people and tap into their deepest fears and desires. Kai also knows when not to do these things. He knows when to simply be charming and gather information. He knows that sometimes taking the time to be polite and play by the rules on the surface enables him to create long cons (ex: using Ivy against Ally and harassing Ally in ways that would only make her seem crazy when she told anyone, since he was seemingly a polite and concerned citizen running for office).
● weaknesses:
While it could be argued by some that being manipulative is a strength of Kai's, it is more of a weakness. Once Kai has his breaking point, he can't seem to control his need and desire to manipulate others, to control his situation and force other's to live in a world that he believes is the right one. Kai's ability to be a genius at manipulation keeps him from truly forming good relationships, from trusting anyone at all -- even his family. It keeps him alone and despite his appearance at times, unhappy.
Kai is also an addict. He's not only addicted to Adderall but he's addicted to fear and to control. He abuses Adderall, which he gets by stealing his older brother's (a psychiatrist) prescription pad. This addiction keeps Kai from sleeping and spurs him from radical to full out delusional. As his addiction gets worse the more violent the cult becomes, the more he doesn't sleep and he spends more and more time in is parents bedrooms with their rotting corpses (and soon following his siblings' corpses). Once he had killed his brother he started to hallucinate him but then he ends up with Charles Manson as a constant companion and a force of his mind that pushes him further and further down a path of destruction of not only his city but himself in the end.
Lastly, Kai is offensive. In truth, he doesn't necessarily believe the racist, misogynistic and homophobic ideas that he puts out. He knows that the easiest way to control people, to gain followers is to appeal to the other to stir their fears and innate insecurities of being oppressed by any minority. He does not care about being politically correct or who he offends unless he is trying to charm someone to his side or for some use. He has done obscene and morally reprehensible things, like, throwing a condom filled with urine at a group of Latino men to bait them into beating him up for his own political gain.
